I would highly recommend you take some lessons, even a basic ASA 101 learn to sail type course would be a good idea, before jumping in and buying a boat. Then, I'd recommend you join a local sailing club and sail on as many different boats as you can for at least a few months. That will help give you an idea of what you're looking for in a boat.
I'd also recommend you get David Seidman's book, The Complete Sailor, which is only about $16 down at the local bookstore. It is very well written and covers a very wide breadth of sailing material, with good illustrations.
Finally, I'd highly recommend you read the POST in my signature to help you get the most out of your time here. It has tips on searching sailnet, writing a good post, etc..

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
