That price is closer to the price that I heard and expected. Too many times people are trying to increase what is reality or they are REALLY getting the "grease" from the dealer. I always wondered what people were talking about when they say this boats $150k or so. It all depends on freight, taxes and commissioning. And these are all too variable to do comparison shopping of boats. (Some states have no taxes....some areas have low freight/shipping).

So when people say another boat is a better deal...the question still remains...Did you include that tax on that used boat at $150k...well if you did...all of a sudden it close to $162k in Calif...right !?...things need to be kept in perspective....and I would tend to think you could negotiate the commisioning fees....if not you are getting ripped off and I would look to another dealer. There is no law that says you can''t......

ok with all that said....buying a 1 or 2 year old boat used is always a better deal...;-)

tsenator,
I was only using the Sabre as an example to say that a used high quality boat can be bought for alot less money than a new more mediocre quality boat and that you would have a much better boat that would not depreciate.
I''m sorry I had to place it in simple terms for you, but I guess I had to.
I didn,t say what I said to get you mad at me.I''m sorry.
From now on,I''ll try to say things that don''t irritate you. I''m sorry.

LL-
Can I be tacky enough to ask what that Hanse is gonna cost you (give or take)? I can''t imagine that it''s as cheap as a Catalina 350! If it is, then that''s a no brainer.

Dennis,

No, it didn''t irritate me. :-). I understood exactly what you meant. And I don''t disagree. Like I said, unless you had the extra money to spend, a used boat is a much value than a brand new boat. But the issue with a used boat is that sometimes there might be a feature that you would like that is only available on a newer boat. For instance I *really* wanted a walk through transom (I cruise and love to anchor in nice peaceful harbors with kids and dogs, so its almost a requirement) and the reality is a lot of great boats that are over 5-7 years old don''t have that feature. I was just wondering if you had that particular boat. I was going to ask what you really liked about it, was is just the higher quality or was there some features you really liked, etc, etc. Don''t have to take things so seriously.

LarryHanseLevine:

Nice choice, I''m sure you''ll be glad you chose quality over a mediocrity for many years to come. As a wise woman once said, "price is soon forgotten, quality remains forever". When do you take delivery?
When I''m in San Diego on business will you take me sailing?

how did you get a sail away price of $124K on the catalina? The base on this is $119k and total comes to $139k that is pretty much loaded. Dealer offered me $130k plus tax for 2002 model he is trying to move. Where do Jeanneau and Hunter and Beneteau stand up against Catalina? I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that Catalina was the better of the 3. Aside from 34 Sabre or 35 Tartan, what else would anyone suggest for quality used boat in under $130k?

One more thought. I have a friend with a Freedom 35 that I have sailed several times... about $140k used... i have heard some pros and cons on this boat and wondered if anyone had good or bad things to say about Freedom.
