Shields 30

I finally figured out the name of those beautiful daysailors used by the OCC sailing class in Newport Beach Harbor. I have been wanting one for a long time. I only saw one on yacht world for sale, for $40,000. This seems to be a ridiculous price. What would be normal? Is there anyone offering a build it yourself kit or plans for this? Is there a similar boat out there?

There are a number of boats somewhat similar to the Shields. International One-Designs, Dragons, S-boats, 6 Meters, Luders, and perhaps a bit less so: Atlantics. The Shields you saw for sale was probably refurbished recently. Others in need of work will be less expensive. I've heard of tired Etchells 22's selling for $5000, but they're not as pretty as a Shields. A Soling is prettier than an Etchells, but isn't quite as dainty as a Shields, but would be less expensive to own or maintain.

A new Shields will run you around $70K with sails, etc. There are some used ones listed on the Shields class website for around 10-15K or so.
