I didn't read all the posts, so what I say may have been said already but I'll say it anyway.
Get a J/24 and forget all the complexity. Learn to sail.
My top reasons for buying the J/24 for your first boat:
Inexpensive to buy and maintain.
Readily available parts /sails / and so forth.
Its beauty lies in simplicity.
Superb platform to sail
Fun, fast, wet
Two can sleep in it and pee in a bucket.
Well built and fun and fast
Not sure if I mentioned that its really fun to sail and fast too.
Self bailing cockpit easily drains all the beer that will spill.
When you are ready to move on there will be a buyer for probably what you paid for it - in a reasonalbe time frame.
Buy after hull #2000, look at at least five for sale, then sail the hell out of it. There are terrific 'how to buy' articles on the class website.
Just my thoughts. I cried when I sold hull #4133.
