Boat Selection Assistance

I am looking at purchasing a boat to live on several months of the year and to sail the Chesapeake Bay, the East coast and the Bahamas. Since I am retired and will solo sail most of the time I am looking at boats in the 34 to 36 foot range. While I am not looking to sail across the Atlantic, I do want a boat that will hold up in occasional conditions that I might experience. Currently I am considering a Catalina 34 or 36 built around 1991-1993. Since cost is a factor and the 34 looks to be around $10K less than the 36, I am leaning that way.

I would appreciate inputs regarding the relative merits of various boats and suggestions as to what I should look out for in my investigations.
