Canadian looking for Broker

Hello everyone!

I'm trying to locate a broker who comes well recommended and can help me find a used sailboat in Florida or the Caribbean.

I live in Canada, so going to look at boats for sale in Florida or the Caribbean will be very expensive and time consuming.

I've spent hours surfing sites like Yachtworld and Boats.com, and I think I have narrowed down the type of boat I need, but I will need the services of a broker to help arrange a viewing, negotiate offers, find a surveyor, finalize the deal, register the boat, pay taxes etc.

Are their any Canadians who have been through this process and can recommend a good broker? I don't even know if a Canadian broker or one in Florida would be best.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Tanny

Have you gone to a recommended local broker and explained what your needs and expectations are? That might be a place to start. These days plenty of boats are bought across the line.. the difference here with you is that nobody need arrange transport north.

It's a difficult process, though.. a few years back a friend here made several lengthy trips to inspect prospective boats (California, Chicago) after strong assurances by the brokers there that it was "exactly what he was looking for" only to realize within 5 mins that he'd wasted the trip. Frustrating and expensive.

Hopefully someone here from the south can hook you up with a good broker and/or surveyor.

Faster,

Yup - I want to contact a broker(s) and give them my needs and expectations - just thought someone here could recommend a good broker to contact.

Also, I don't know if hiring a broker in Canada, or hiring one in Florida where the boats are, would be best.

I certainly want to avoid the frustration and expense your friend experienced. I think I'd be asking my broker for pictures and full specs before taking his word that it would be worth a long and expensive trip to view any boat.

By local broker I meant one in YOUR area now. He/She may have connections and access and perhaps info/scuttlebutt on others in the boat selling business down south.

You'll likely end up dealing with another broker later too, of course, unless you go the craigslist route like some have here.

We hired a broker to present the offer and to do the counter offers. In my opinion, you are going to have to do the leg work yourself. you will be finding the listings yourself, and come up with a spread sheet of questions and start making phone calls to the listing brokers. Better yet put your questions in writing, and don't be disappointed when they only answer half of them. If your experience is any thing like ours, you will feel like a babysitter by the time you are done. Every broker talks to buyers every day that say they are ready to buy, but the problem is the buyers some times take a year to decide, so most brokers treat every customer like a lookey Lou. They are not realtors after all. In the end you will probably wonder why you didn't just present the offer to the listing broker yourself, and deduct the commission he would have given to your broker. Every broker we tried to get to find us a boat, just sent us the yachtworld listings we already had seen. Just my opinion, maybe you will have better luck. BLU.

Why, why, why?

Faster,

I see that you are in New Westminster, BC.

I'm in Calgary, and there aren't a lot of sailboat brokers here. Can you recommend any local BC brokers?

I'll chip in and recommend a firm I know well in Sidney, B.C.
Custom Yacht Sales Ltd. - British Columbia
I know both Greg and Rom and have dealt with them in the past as have friends. They have been importing US boats and dealing south for many years not just in the current financial situation.

Just bought the above boat long distance through Maritime yacht Sales St Thomas. Dave McCall treated me fairly and was very resposive to requests for info, etc.
