Survey Cost??

I am considering a 28 foot mid '80's sailboat in eastern North Carolina near New Bern. The survey quotes I am receiving are $20 - $22 a foot plus $50.00 for travel time (approx. 40 minutes each way). Does this seem reasonable?

Thanks,

Seems a bit high to me... 5 years back we paid $12/foot USD in Washington State. Travel was not an issue there, but the travel fee seems less unreasonable than the /foot rate.

But different markets, different times.......

This is very much a function of the local market so my prices in RI or Florida (or anywhere else) would/should be meaningless to you. Has it been difficult to obtain price quotes from other surveyors in your area? Seems like a few phone calls would be more productive than the internet

Might be worth asking at a couple of boatyards in New Bern for recommendations.

manhattan, if you're getting multiple quotes in the same price range that's probably what that area gets this time of year. More important than price, is which surveyor has the best reputation? If someone misses one little thing...it can cost you more than the whole survey.

2 years ago I paid what amounts to $12.50/sq' to have my boat surveyed (buyers survey) out of Michigan, but it really depends on the area and demand. Also, I noted that the survey on another boat 6 months earlier (late winter) was a bit higher - don't know whether that was the time of year, or just variation. It is worth it to get a good survey. Good luck with the new boat purchase.

Just paid $20 a foot in the BVI/USVI.

Well, hell, if i was a surveyor i'd go whole hog and charge by the cubic foot. After all, these are displacement hulls we're talking about, not surfboards.
