Hi.
Im about to purchase a boat in the Caribbean,
I have two offers very good price deals, and I cant make up my mind.
I Dont have much extra money and should charter the Jeanneau to pay repairs.

1 jeanneau Sun Odysseay 51. year 90. needs almos 4 month of work to go. needs new rigging. us70.000

2 Bavaria Holiday 46- Ready to wear. needs new electronics. the rest its in good condition Us 60.000

could you give me your opinion?

Hmm... A 46' boat for $60,000... I am getting the feeling that something else is wrong with it besides electronics... same thing with a 51' boat for $70,000

Granted, the 51' boat is 20 years old....but still. A recent 35' boat that was at least that old sold for $60,000 or so last I checked, and it was in very good shape.

I'd point out that a recent search I did for boats 44-55' LOA and 1987-1997 didn't yield a single boat below $160,000 except for a single gulfstar... which didn't surprise me...

If the boat is in need of new rigging, exactly how do you expect to charter it? It can't be sailed safely without replacing the rigging.

I think you're being foolish by even considering either of these floating wrecks... YMMV.

I understand what you say.

I plan to change the riggin before sailing. or chartering..the jeanneau. as its 20 years old.

I understand what you say about the prices. We made a survey on the jeanneau and find lots of things to fix. but we already know what they are. The owner cant come back for her. the jeanneau has benn on the hard for two years now. And he wants to get rid of her.

In the case of the bavaria, we understand the owner is ill. and cant come back. he needs to sell right now.

How would be the reselling possibilities for both?

Where in Caribbean are these boat? I would recommend hiring a surveyor to take a quick look at both, not a full inspection at first but a general overview in order to give you a recommendation on whether or not it is work continuing. Alternatively, get a buyer's broker (no cost to you!) who can get a look at the boats and offer recommendations as well.
