buying a derelict...

so theres this boat in a boat yard in california and its been abandoned for about ten years. it has potential but currently is a wreck. no cf number, no document, no hull id number, and no trace of the last owner who abandoned it. the yard wants to get it out of there understandably but how does one take possession in a situation like this? in california in particular? and does it in a way that it can eventually be coast guard documented? im looking for someone whos actually done it...

You'd have to have the yard take ownership of it...since it is on their property... then you'd have to have them transfer ownership to you. Yes, it can be USCG documented... but you'd probably want help from a documentation company to do so, given its history.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
