Newport 27 w/o inboard

Hi All,
I'm looking at purchasing one of the several Newport 27's in the LA area.
They all seem to have their Atomic 4 inboards removed.
I am planning on attaching an outboard with a lifter for safety and docking, so I'm not concerned about having a bit of power.
My concern is about the trim of the boat and the seaworthiness of the hull.
We are not planning on anything more than maybe a crossing to Catalina in good (predicted) weather.
Should I keep looking?
What other 25-28' should I be considering.
We want a large cockpit so our friends can sail with us.
