Newport 212

First time poster here, and I'd like to thank all the contributors and the hosts for providing countless hours worth of reading.

I've been doing a lot of research, looking for a trailer-sailor for my family. And found many comments about various models. They've been very helpful.

I found an ad for a 1975 Newport 22' sailboat. The pictures accompanying the ad seem to verify that this might be a Newport 212, but the owner must have the year wrong.

I've even picked up a copy of The Sailor’s Book of Small Cruising Sailboats, which mentioned this model.

Anyway, I'll get to the point. Are there any owner's of this model that might share some info, or pictures? The book I got said something about unusual centerboard lifting gear and storage. I would like more information. The boats owner is currently out of state and will be gone for another week, so I haven't seen this boat in person.

I would just like some more information prior to seeing it and/or making an offer.

I am a newbie sailor looking to sail in local NE Ohio lakes, and possibly short trips in protected areas on Lake Erie.

So, would any of you helpful people be able to shed any light?

I find it very strange that you posted this message just a few hours ago. I have owned a 212 for the last ten years but until last week I thought it was a Newport 21. I just logged on to try to find info on this boat. The "unique" centerboard has been a thorn in my side from day one:though much of my aggravation has been due to my own modifications. I have been very pleased with my boat this boat. I too live in NEOH, the boat is on Mosquito Lake. LMK and I'll follow up with more info if you have specific questions

Wow....how crazy is that? I live in Warren, and Mosquito would be my primary lake for sailing. Would it be too much to ask to come take a look at your boat sometime, as I'd like to become more familiar with what I'm looking at. I tried to PM you, but I don't have enough posts yet, but you can email me: hoover dot erik at gmail dot com

Wow I cant believe I've found some other potential owners of a Newport 21 (or 212?) I bought a 72 newport 21 on ebay just over a month ago and havnt been able to find anything about it untill tonight. In fact I wasnt even sure it was a Newport as I couldnt find any info on them producing a boat like mine. My boat looks just like the one shown at ....

sailboatdata .com

but mine only has one window rather than two. I can see how people would have problems with the centerboard, mine seems to work alright but it has had some glass work done to it which makes me think its been torn open at somepoint. I get a little water in it when under way but nothing to serious.. maybe a half gallon after several hours of sailing in gusty wind.

I've saild it twice and its a fairly quick and nimble boat and not bad in light wind either.

Id be real excited to find out anymore about this boat that I can, if anyone knows where I can find more please let me know.
