22' Catalina for 250$

Heres the deal, I know a guy who has a 22' Catalina thats in apparent good condition, but its mast and trailer have been stolen. I came across a 22' Catalina on craigslist with trailer, mast the whole 9 yards minus the sails. Apparently he had 5 others look at it and no one wanted it because theres a part on the deck that is soft, so he told me I could have it for 300$ (talked him down to 250$ ). I didnt hesitate because I knew I had a decent one floating that I could just throw the mast and trailer at. I went and took a look at the donor Catalina today and was surprised to find that its not near as bad as I thought it was going to be. With the inside being in good condition and the outside paint not to shabby.

The side of the hull can be pushed in, as seen in below video. Are the hulls supposed to be able to do this?! My helsen hull is hard as a rock. Is this boat pretty much just parts? Also, how do I go about getting rid of this much fiberglass, chainsaw and a junkyard?

For $250 bucks - I'd buy it for sure. Just the trailer and parts are worth that.

As for the hull flex - there are guys on here that know a lot about that stuff and I'm not one of them. But fiberglass does flex - and the C22 is a lightly built boat - so it doesn't seem out of line to me really.

If you're just going to clean it up, take it out and daysail it for kicks, it would be hard to go wrong for $250 - even with a soft deck. As long as it floats and can keep the stick up under sail - who cares how worn it is. You'll be sailing!

I'm not surprised the hull is flexing, especially given the amount of water (weight) in the cockpit. The Catalina 22 is a lightly built boat and unlike previous boats of its size, isn't laid up with a massively thick hull. It also isn't designed for severe weather conditions.

Instead of just trashing the boat, I'd part it out... the winches, bow pulpit, winches, and other hardware are definitely worth salvaging and selling on craigslist or eBay.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Yeah - but first you have to try to sail it! It could end up being a sweet little daysailer.

Sailormon6 will become famous soon enough
Although it's difficult to tell for sure from a photo or video, the hull flexing appears to be normal. The Catalina 22 hull is solid fiberglass. The hull doesn't have a core that could be deteriorating. Only the decks are cored. It's designed for inland lake sailing and fair weather coastal cruising.

The soft decks can be repaired, but, personally, I wouldn't spend the time and effort to do it. A young guy with more time on his hands than money might very well see it differently. He might see it as a chance to use his sweat equity to get a decent boat.

I'd suggest you log onto a Catalina 22 forum and announce that you're parting it out. There are bound to be people who need a new mast, or hatch, or winches, or other usable parts.

Funny, I have a Cat 22 and my hull does not flex when pushing on it........I am also looking for one to use as parts (want to encapsulate a swing keel in west system without having to stop using my boat until its time to install it). For 250 I would jump on it. Your lucky I haven't run across it or I would already have it.

My original intention was to part it out considering that the paper work would be a pain to get cleared, and I have another one floating about that I hear is in good condition. My 22' helsen's hull is hard as a rock so it looks like ill be going with that.

I could always make a pretty sweet power boat out of the hull.

Hull flex on the sides above the waterline is totally normal because this area is very thin, but below the waterline is extremely thick and should not flex. This is one reason why I prefer to either moor a C22 on a buoy, or tie it in the middle of a slip, but not to tie to a dock on one side.

These hulls are extremely well made compared to other cheap trailerable daysailors- they're very thick hand-laid fiberglass.

This boat is definitely fixable, but it will probably need a few thousand dollars in materials alone- so not worth it to most people IMO. What is the hull #? If it's old enough (less than 1,000 or so) then it's extremely valuable to racers because it's lighter weight.

I'm looking for a few C22 parts if you decide to part it out and have them- PM me:

-chainplate eyebolts if they're the 1/2" and not the 3/8" version
-vinyl pop-top cover
-keel winch if it's the newer galvanized, and not painted rusty steel type

A C22 hull would make a terrible powerboat, because it's a displacement hull shape and becomes very unstable and difficult to control above 6 knots, and needs the keel ballast to stay upright.

If you do part it out, please post it on our e-mail list here:

catalina22 : catalina22

There's about 300 C22 owners in the group, and many of us could really use parts from your boat!
