This cal-27 worth poking at?

I just found this on the local craigslist

27ft sloop

Looking at the picture, I think it is a cal-27 t2?

Thoughts? $1700 with no motor, and wiring work? What if the structure is sound, and the sails are in decent shape?

I don't think I'm seriously considering it. But the lure is there.

These were reasonably good little boats and, assuming the boat is not wasted, that would not be a bad price. Note, however, that the purchase price is just the beginning of the story. Ensure you have the means to cover the rest of the costs of ownership which should not be underestimated.

FWIW...

Also, since it has no engine, you would probably have to factor in the cost of replacing it...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

If:

If the core is dry.
If you have a lead on a used, inexpensive, reliable outboard.
If the sails aren't trash
If you could maybe bump him down to $1500

Then I'd take a stab at it.

For comparison, I paid $1800 for a '69 25 footer with an absolutely bone-dry deck core, a 2006 Honda OB with 200 hours on it, a good pair of jibs and a very, very, tired mainsail, a mangled fusebox and a ruined bilge pump.

Your boat is a more popular model than mine, it's a little larger and faster, so if it's dry, and you can locate an outboard, why not?

The picture makes it look clean. Wiring could be as simple as 50' of some 14g wire for interior lights. I could not imagine a T2 which that is having a lot of wires.

There are three in my YC, two race, and race very well to ratings. Very hard to beat. Also a very good light air boat. If it is clean etc. 1700 would be a very good price. Personlly, in great shape etc, I would expect to see it in the mid 4 figure range.

No.No.No.

You people are supposed to tell me what a horrible idea it is! Not waggle the carrot.

He sent me a few more (current) pictures. The hull and deck do look very clean.

It is in the water right now out at Vinalhaven Island, ME. He is willing to sail it over to the mainland for me to look at.

It is so...so...so tempting.

Actually I think I'm passing on it for a completely different reason. The household skipper made it clear that any boat I bought right now had better have a good cabin, and heater. Because it would become an instant single-hand live-aboard ... if you get my meaning.

Personally, I'd jump on it.
