1982 Cape Dory 28

Anyone have any opinions on this make of boat for coastal cruising and what I should ask the surveyor about specifically?

Hiya Advocate, SailingDog has a list of surveyor questions. Look him up in sailnet.

The photos look good, check for any rot of course in bulkheads, bubbles in the hull, previous hull integrity problems, chainplates/ rudder post/rig/engine dramas. Walk on every square inch of the deck for any any soft regions. Etc etc. Then get a surveyor of course.

She looks pretty good from the topsides. I am guessing she has a long keel?

Our first yacht was similar (30') and she cruised the east coast of Australia. Prev owner took her Noumea and back. So, its all been done before. I have no idea of the prices on that size/age, but a local will help there.

Good luck

Cape Dory has an outstanding reputation and built some very fine yachts. There is a Cape Dory owners site which can give you tons of info. If its been well cared for and in good shape you can't go wrong. Not known as a speed demon but a very capable little yacht.

Advocate—

I suspect that St. Anna is referring to the Boat Inspection Trip Tips thread I started, which is a good starting point when looking at any boat.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
