Junk Rig

I would like to hear from sailors that have been around sailboats rigged with free-standing masts and junk rig sails. This configuration seems ideal for anyone sailing single-handed. I have heard the comments that this setup is a poor performer to windward, but how many folks really beat to windward? I am considering buying a boat with a solid hull/interior but in need of major standing rigging upgrades. Then going to a junk rig setup. I would appreciate any useful suggestions. Thanks
