CS 30? CS 33? - Please offer comments!

Hi,
Previously, I posted a thread on Mirage 32 vs CS, and received some great feedback. The Mirage is still on our list, but we are comparing it further.

We are now looking at CS 30 or 33...1984 or 85.
Looking for ususal amenities, plus hot water, shower in the head, a 3 stroke diesel, as well as a dodger and bimini, in the GTA area.
From what we can tell by looking at some photo's and specs, the beam is a bit wider on the 33, and the v berth may be a bit larger.
We like the fact that there is an aft cabin, and, that the traveller is over the
cabin doorway, vs in the cockpit on the floor.

CS have a fine rep, and keep their value...
I don't know of any common problems with either, but would appreciate it if
you folks can speak about any that you know of.
My hubby and I need about 6 ft of head room down below, too.

Please advise your thoughts!

Thanks in advance

While both are nice boats, the 33 is 'old school' Ray Wall CS (like the original 27 and 36T), the 30 is a Tony Castro design, as are the 34, 36M, 40 and 44.

All are good looking boats with good reps and generally very satisfied owners, and all probably overall a cut above the Mirages.

I think the original CS line are 'brawnier' boats and may have a slightly overall higher quality construction - but that's mostly a gut feeling rather than evidential. I know owners of nearly every CS model and they were all quite happy with what they had - including a Castro 40 that has done the distance from the Carib to BC via Panama and Galapagos. With the 33 I seem to recall there were models with and without a quarterberth.

The Mirages are a little 'frigidaire' in their finish - lots of white f/g liners, but Perry has worked his magic with an easily driven hull that results in a nice performing boat with a smallish easy-to-handle sailplan. Great cockpit, too.

This will likely come down to the individual boats' condition and amenities, coupled with your own gut reactions to what you see.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments...makes me look at them from a
different perspective!

Our sailing will likey be contained to Lake Ontario, either local to our home, or the odd jaunt down Kingston way, or even across the lake to the U.S.,
(yes, we are aware of the required documentation for that exercise).
We do not plan to race, but, on a good day when the wind is kicking, I'll be expecting the hubby to fill the sails and heel her !

Owners of CS are welcome to join in!!

Thanks, Faster!!!

HBBurlington,

We have a CS34 that will be on the market this spring. It's a different boat from a CS33. Ours is a 1991 model, one of the last ones built, and is completely loaded (heat air etc).
email me at johnandlis at rogers.com for more info.
Cheers
