Island Trader 38

One of my sailing buddies is looking at an Island Trader 38. He asked my opinion (silly guy). Well, this is a new one to me. Do any of you have any first hand experiences I can pass on to him.

He currently has a C&C 30 (his third sailboat)

Many thanks all

ISLAND TRADER 38 Sailboat details on

This will be quite a departure from his C&C 30.. and I'd wonder if this particular model might fall into the 'leaky teaky Taiwanese' category like so many of the trawlers that came out of that era.

Of course if it's still in good shape and has been maintained then perhaps most of those types of issues have been addressed.

But as a full keel heavy displacement boat, I'd be hoping his sailing plans are different than what he's been up to till now.

Re: Island Trader 38

I just joined the forum. I've had an Island Trader 38 for many years. Staying on top of maintenance is of course a priority. Ours is still looking great for a 32 year old sailboat! We've thoroughly enjoyed it. I have a question for anyone that has had to pull their prop shaft out. Do you have to take the rudder out before being able to pull the prop shaft? I know there is an indent on the leading/forward edge of the rudder. Once I have
taken off the prop; does the half-moon indent give you enough clearance to pull the shaft the rest of the way? Looks like if I turn the rudder all the way to right or left I might be able to have enough clearance. Going to pull her out of the water soon and wanted to hear from anyone with first hand experience. Thanks.

Re: Island Trader 38

He better be heading for the Tradewinds or he's going to spend most of his time motoring or just sitting there. I know a guy who's restoring one or a clone in my local boatyard and he says it goes upwind less well than a Morgan OI - 55 apparent.

Fabulous boat to look at or sit in at anchor but.....
