I'm in California and it's definitely done by the DMV here when a boat's not CG documented.

The main problem with the DMV is long waits and lines - otherwise I've not had a problem with them.

So Mark - I assume the survey went well? What about the boat? Do tell....

BTW,

1) You may want to use a marine title company to check for leins, transfer ownership, etc. Depends on value of boat and your specific situation. Again, I can let you know who I used if that would help - if nothing else, she could provide more knowledgeable advice.....

2) Be prepared to pay the sales tax when you register at the DMV. When I bought my boat it took around 8 months for the sales tax request to come through (documented vessel).

Well my offer has been accepted on another boat, through a reputable broker this time. We have a sea trial next week then the survey will follow. I've got a couple of good surveyor recommendations, and it'll probably come down to who can do it first.

I'll post details of the boat when the trial and survey are done!

I'm assuming the broker will assist with title transfer.

You might want to hire a marine title transfer company. Ask your broker for recommendations. Who are the two surveyors who are on your list to survey the boat? (send me a private message on that one)

On the issue of DMV vs. USCG, the DMV charges the annual property tax on the bill for your annual sticker. If you are USCG documented you pay your County Assessor an annual property tax bill. The cost is the same except that there are no DMV Reg Fees for a USCG documented boat (it's not that much anyway).
