Why RIP? Doesn't look so bad.

I assume it was designed and built in '78 as glass over wood (not that it matters so much). As long as the throughhulls and any other water intrusion points have been handled appropriately, that hull should be just fine.

If the westerbeke really runs as well as advertised, she could be a real diamond in the rough. Just needs a survey to find out.

(sorry, biased, have to root for old wooden boats. heck, '78 is downright modern)

zed, I'm a woodenboat lover as well, but seeing how she is stored and the fact that there are no spars makes me think that there is likely a real mess under the mast steps and in the bilge.

Yeah, amazing how much depends on how it was stored. Only the survey will tell...

For the record, we're hopefully splashing as soon as Simcoe melts (well, and Passover ends). I'm sure you're already sailing...

Looks like it only needs a few years of work, and a budget that would probably pay for a brand new boat, to get her in Bristol condition.

Those boats were designed and built glass over strip. It's a good method (not balsa) and they have a good rep. There is an ebay find in my marina, a 41' ketch that had broken masts. The owner bought it cheap, repaired the spars, and now sails a boat he could not otherwise afford.
I agree that with projct boats one has to sort through many rocks before finding a gem. But if you don't look at all you won't find anything.

Instead of wooden spars, wouldn't you want to update it with aluminum ones?
