How do you do a Title search?

Hi all

Any personal experience with this. My buddy is just finalizing the
purchase of an Endevor 37. How does he do a Title search on the boat?

Boat is in Massachusetts.

Thanks

Rik

Is it USCG documented or state registered?

Calling the USCG Vessel Documentation Center will help if it is documented. Otherwise I would think the State of MA should be able to help.

This is from the seurvey:

"The HIN on the transom is not fully legible, but the Hull Identification
Number (HIN) is in agreement with the vessel's USCG Documentation papers."

So, USCG documented - right?

Happy to help anyone north of the 49th, but I am a neophyte with US boats.

Yup. Go here and click on instructions. You will see their phone number. They are very nice and helpful.

You will be asking for an abstract of title.

I'm new to buying a boat in the US, so I got a Marine Titling specialist to handle the paperwork.

$$$

Much cheaper to do yourself and the folks at the VDC walk you through it.

Well the one I'm using is on the West Coast and you might want to find one on the East Coast. Maybe start a new thread on the boat purchase forum?

Hi Rik,
To piggy back on this thread. I'm wondering how to do a title search in Canada and what our licensing requirements are here in Ontario. I haven't found much online.

Firstly, the title search. Where does one do a title search in Canada?

Secondly, licensing. I'm about to purchase a Contessa 26 w/ 7hp Farymann that was previously licensed in Ontario under the old licensing scheme (33eXXXX). It appears that as of last May boats under 10hp do not need a licence.
Pleasure Craft Licences
Since we used to pay tax at licensing time... does that mean no HST now? I can't be that lucky.

I suppose I can call the gov't, but I imagine that if I do they'll say everything needs to be registered and taxed as a default statement.

Thoughts?
