Will she be mine?
I'm buying a boat... I think. Her name is Morgan, and her measurements are 35, 11, 4'11. Her PO describes her as a 35' with a Westerbeke, 3 cyl 25 HP diesel. However, the title says she is 35' 4", and Westerbeke has a 24HP and 26HP 3 cyl from what I've seen around, but I find no 25HP 3 cyl. I've hunted around for the Morgan website looking for more details on that boat and engine info, but no luck. She needs a lot of work in the interior, including returning her from the PO rigged straight drive configuration to v-drive powered propulsion. Here are my questions? Where can I find the hull #? Where can I find systems schematics, diagrams, layout plans? How can I more clearly identify the Westerbeke to insure that I do have adequate power? Is 25HP big enough? Any information or links will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Arol

MORGAN 34 Sailboat details on

they also list data for the 35. if you boat was made post '72 see if the hull number is stamped on the transom. also, it should be on the title which the owner should have.

Find a good surveyor. You'll need one for insurance purposes if you plan to insure her. A good surveyor will be able to answer all of the many questions you'll need to ask. The HP on most engines isn't always what is claimed by the manufacturer. When and if you take her out for a sea trial, you'll find out just how suitable the engine is. If you're cruising grounds have significant tidal action, you'll find that some extra umph will help get you back to the dock during an ebb tide.

"including returning her from the PO rigged straight drive configuration to v-drive powered propulsion. "
Sounds like the PO replaced the entire powertrain, for better or worse. 24hp, 25hp, no big difference. There's no such thing as a Westerbleak [sic] engine anyway, they just bought engines and parts from the cheapest bidder, threw 'em all together, and generously painted everything red. Including the rubber belts and hoses that the rubber companies tell you NEVER TO PAINT.
But, if it spins up when you hit the key, and it plays nicely with others, it's an engine and that's all that matters.
