Boat purchased in the US

Hi, my husband and I purchased a boat last year in the US (we are Canadian citizens), and we want to bring it to Canada for the summer. Does anyone know if we are required to pay the HST if we are taking it back to the US and how long can we stay in Canadian waters without paying the tax?

It is my understanding that the HST becomes payable when the boat enters Canada, even it it is temporary.

You are required to pay sales tax (HST in ontario) as soon as you enter Canadian waters. If the boat was built in a non- NAFTA country you will also have to pay duty. There is no escape.
