140,000 to spend on a 50 foot boat....
I have been looking for a yacht around 50 feet in length, upto a maximum of 140k to use as a family cruising yacht, and also do a bit of luxury skippered charter to cover some costs.

I have looked at a beneteau 473, but would love anyones input. (preferably in the uk, as thats where I am!!)

There are a lot of boats out there that folks can provide a vast amount of input on, perhaps you could be a little more specific with your question? Are you interested in knowing about only Bene 473s available in the UK or for any yacht sugestions in this price/size range?

If you are asking for suggestions on the latter then I suggest you tell a little bit about yourself, experience, where and how you will sail, what are 'must have' options, etc.

Welcome to the board.

ok.. sorry.. more info
the boat needs to be comfortable for the 2 of us plus 3 kids. (plus they will probably want to bring friends occasionally). I like doing the west highland yachting regattas etc, with a bit of (not too serious) racing. I think we will get as much enjoyment from her when she is stern too in the marina. Therefore, she needs to be comfortable, and spacious. And have a little 'kerb appeal'...

I am reasonably experienced, having crewed on a beneteau 523 for a number of years. But my family are not,, so i need it to be safely sailed from the cockpit as much as is possible.

Thanks for your time helping me out!

so no.. not just interested in a 473,, it just seemed to be a good starting point!

just a small addition,, we would really like to spend around 115-120k and have some over to upgrade electrics/personalise/add anything we need aboard..

Sails, running + standing rigging, engine work, then electronics.

Based on USA prices thats about 200,000 and there are plenty of 10 years old or less over here

My family owns a Catalina 42mkII (wing keel), and while it is quite a bit less then 50 ft, it seems to be plenty of space for our whole family (the 6 of us). It also sails great (IMO)! so I would definitely recommend it to someone with a similar size family who will be doing mostly coastal cruising.

thanks for your thoughts,

I am looking at something around the 50 mark, just because it gives us a bit more luxury and a bit more charter scope...

anyone got any experience with bavaria?

Yorksailor 06-15-2011 10:11 AM

Bavaria are reasonable 'bang for the buck' and are good sailors. We had 6 adults and 2 kids on a 48 ft Bavaria without problems.

You need to keep at least 20% of your cash in reserve because an older boat will need constant yearly repairs and upgrades.

My wife and I sail a 55 but she is lots of work and very expensive to fix...keep it in the 42-48 ft range.

Good luck Phil

Thanks Phil,

erring towards a beneteau 473... I regularly crew on a friend's 523, and she is a lovely craft. they are just making an extra 100k that I dont have at the moment!!
From all I've read, the 473 is just as good at what she does,, albeit with 5 foot trimmed off.

But if anyone has any other thoughts, please dont hesitate......
