Paying to live on someone else''''s boat?

In a year or two I will be buying a sailboat (morgan 382,tartan 37, etc.) for extended cruising and live-aboard. I am currently sailing as crew on a number of different boats to get a feel for what I like and don''t like. However, I only get a chance to stay on a boat when I charter, once or twice a year.

I would like to find someone who has a boat in a marina that they are not using right now, and pay them to live on it for a few weeks. The boat would never leave the slip. This would enable me to really get a feel for the accomodations.

I''m thinking about Liberty Landing Marina or Liberty Harbor Marina in NJ.

Is this weird? What are my chances? Should I approach the marina? (I have a feeling they won''t like the idea of a non-owner staying on a boat).
