Looking at a 1982 22' Spectrum

I found a 1982 22' Spectrum for sale, can't find much info on them. I have been looking at Cat 22,s as well as O-day and Chryslers. Any opinions on the Spectrum would be a big help. It looks to be in good shape with nice trailer and two full sets of sails for $800.

These were built in Florida by Spectrum Yachts and were designed by Jim Taylor... see the link ..looks like the deck is foam cored rather than balsa which sounds like a plus.. probably not all that speedy but more like a Catalina 22. Has a pop top which can give you decent headroom. Might not be a bad boat for weekending especially on inland lakes. Has a stub keel and a weighted centerboard. Thats all I could find out, same hull was used for the Starwind..

Thanks for the info, still not to confident. Sounds like a great deal for the money , but dont want somthing that is going to be a headache. I am going to be sailing inland lakes on the weekends with my wife. Dont mind doing some work, but it is a challenge when you cant get parts.

My bet would be that you cannot get manufacturer parts for 95% of the boats built before 1990. Cat yes, anyone else?

If you dont want something that is going to be a headache, plan to spend $8000 not $800. An operable trailer alone is worth $800. Frankly the little Spectrum looks like a sweet trailerable, Jim Taylor is a first class designer who does nice stuff. If I were looking for what you say you want, this boat or a small S2 would be the way to go - they are head and shoulders above the common trash boats found in this size/price range.

My opinion is this is a boat worth a close look...perhaps you want to look for one asking $5000 and you wont need to get your hands too dirty.
