Delivery vs. Truck Transport

Skippered delivery (paid) or Trucking a 30 ft sailboat from Annapolis Maryland to Mystic Connecticut?

The marina the boat is stored at has quoted me $1700 to unstep the mast and load the boat onto a truck.

The first trucking quote was $3000 to ship it to Mystic.

I'm in shock...sticker shock. Are these prices in line or am I just spoiled at my marina?

Prices and pitfalls of hiring a delivery captain? Is it worth it for a 30 ft boat?

No, I can't get the time off now to deliver the boat myself. Although I would love to.

Very rough numbers:
3-7 man-hours lower rig
4-8 man-hours to load and secure
7-15 man hours at $75-95 an hour

Strongly rec shrink wrap this time of year - think 10 hours of 65 mph rain

When I moved the Cal 29 from Brewers in glen cove to my house on Long Island which was about 35 miles

They were pretty good at making it as expensive as Possable as it was in the 1000 dollar range to power wash the bottom step the mast and drop the boat on my movers truck

And that boat was in NO way ready for more than the 35 miles it was moved and I ran up about 1500 dollars to drop it in my driveway

How long a drive is that? We've had 35 foot boats delivered from Portland and from the SF area to Blaine WA for less than that...

Can you winter store it in Annapolis and sail it home next spring?

$1700 is a lot. Many yards will haul out, unstep, winter store, and restep + launch for close to that price.

My previous boat is in a yard where I helped haul and launch my boat in the off season. I've been doing it for the last 11 years.

I Remove sails, boom, tie off running rigging, loosen turnbuckles = 1- 1.5 hrs

Crane comes over and preps to haul the stick 15 minutes

Detach standing rigging, and pull the stick 30 minutes x 3 men = 1.5 hrs

Tie off the standing rigging and move the mast to storage. 15 minutes x 3 men = .75 hrs

Move the crane back to the boat, attack slings, haul the boat and block it 30 minutes x 3 men = 1.5 hrs.

five man hours @ $90/hr = $450.
(In reality, it takes three guys about an 1.5 hrs to do this and we could also power wash the bottom in the time span mentioned above, but, I rounded up to be fair.)

They must take a lot of smoke breaks in Annapolis

I guess I'm just not used to those prices.

6 hours tops. About 350 miles.

Well, just keep it in Annap til spring and we can help each other deliver our new boats!

Just bought a 36' boat in RI. It's staying there til April. Give me time to do a few things to it and then I'll delivery it down to Naptown. Never gave a moment's thought to having it trucked.

I could, in theory, but my time off is limited unless I plan far, far in advance so I'm afraid I might run into some weather window issues. It's a long way up the coast at 5-6 knots.

Loading and securing a 10,000 lbs keelboat plus rig on a trailer requires a fair amount of time.
