I have talke to a person that lives close by who has a tayana. they suggest that i rip up the teak decks also. I just hate doing that though. the teak for me is the main attraction.

I am not retired, but i am off for a month at a time and only work 6 months out of the year.

Rockter will become famous soon enough
Take some pictures and post them on here.
Take some close-up stuff of the decks and the motor.
Remember that if the decks are worn thin, they will break as you try to lift them.
You would probably be better tearing them up and glassing them.

Overall on at least 2 forums the advise you have gotten was to run away! Yet you still sound like you believe you should buy it. Let us know in a few years how it works out.

You may be in a unique position to fix this boat up then. Not all of us are so fortunate to work a schedule like that.

I'm not going to scream "run away", but I'll stand by my earlier statement that even with your friendly schedule, this is a huge undertaking and that you'd better shed your other hobbies for a while so that you can devote your time, energy and money to this boat. I understand your timing vs. boat vs. cash problem, and why it may be pushing you towards this boat.

I know the teak is attractive, I agree that you should remove it. You can still put plenty of brightwork trim on her to give her some warmth and character.

Since it sounds like you're slowly moving towards the purchase, you might as well post up some photos so that we can help you assess the work ahead.

For those of you, like me, that hate mystery; here is an ad for the boat (aking $32.5K);

The seller seemed honest about the condition of the vessel, at least. I'd sure offer less, depending on the condition of the hull, interior and seacocks.

Take your best estimates and double them. There will be any number of surprise issues that pop up once you get started.

Can a Bear jump into this with an Not off subject but different boat?
Again in fla. Got an add of the internet that jumped in to my brain. A 1981 Seidelmann S37. $11,900. "The biggest Seidelmann ever made." I can't find any spec's on this boat on line.". Positives: NEW 2010 YANMAR 3GMD (3 cyl, 23 hp) engine (oil just changed)/NEW Transmission/NEW Alternator, bottom paint job was done in September 2010 (still looking good). Deck is firm. All fiberglass is good. New mast (54 ft) was put in November 2011, from Oday 37. Now, the negatives: Shrouds need to be adjusted. Minor repair, low cost. Repacking of the stuffing box is required. A female nut on the shaft needs to be replaced. All windows leak and need attention. Ceiling needs some repair/possible replacement. If serious, boat should probably be taken out of water and in a month it could be 'ship ready'." Quotes from add. Sounds too good for the price. My thinking $25K repairs, maybe. Haven't done anything....yet. Generally if it sounds too good, run don't walk to the nearest exist...but even blind bears run into honey trees. Retired now, a fair hand at reasonable boat repairs, firm believer in when in doubt call in the experts...So I'm asking before I jumb overboard.

well,

i looked at the boat. the more i dug, the more water damage i found. So I passed. Thank you all for all the advice on what to look for and what it would take to repair. I am sorry that I did not dismiss the boat on some of your advice alone, but I have to make up my own mind on things. It would be a good project for someone.

Thanks all
Troy

Troy, I totally understand your disappointment, your yearning for a cool fixer-upper. This was not the one ! You will find one soon. It's a buyer's market. You've made the only decision possible here. You made the right choice !
