BOTY Comparison

Please educate me....

Among CW's BOTY candidates were a Hallsberg-37 (respected o/s boat) with 711sqft of sail area, 16,500lbs displacement and 6'7 draft........

There was also a IP360 (also a respected o/s boat) with 714 sqft of sail area, 19,300lbs displacement and 4' of draft.

What does the difference in draft in light of the general similarity of the other numbers say about the Hallsberg?

two completely different boats, with different purposes and different designs to achieve those goals.

One thought is that the IP are more coastal cruiser oriented, thus shallow draft. Certainly their hulls are of a more tried and true, vintage design - pudgy. However if you read the design reviews at IP you will understand what they are striving for and if that fits your needs....

Hallberg Rassy more of an ocean boat, but again if you read the design notes there, you can see an option for a shallow draft boat. The deep draft will keep it out of a lot of really nice cruising on the east coast.

Having sailed on both, the HR is a sailors boat with awesome performance. It could be a liveaboard and is designed for that. The IP is more sluggish, easy to sail, more comfortable action and is a great liveaboard also.

Both are premium (read: expensive) boats when compared to the us production boats, extremely well crafted. Once you have been aboard them, a lot of where that added cost is can easily be seen. Even more is not what you see, but how serviceable and well designed the systems are.

YMMV, and I sure would not consider ANY BOTY comparo as gospel...sail them and see for your self.

I wonder if anyone will take issue with the characterization of IP as a coastal cruiser. If IP can be thought of as a coastal cruiser, where does that put my Hunter 36.

I know it isn't all black and white, but I think IP and HR and more alike than IP and Hunter. Would you agree?

did not mean to imply that the IP was even close to the Hunter in any way.. shape...or form.

the coastal cruiser comparo I mentioned was my slip mate the last several years, extremely well equipped, even more well equipped. They used it two or three times a year to do Deltaville to Naptown and back. Every month they paid someone to turn her around in the slip so things would weather evenly.

My last boat, Hunter 42...compares to neither IP or HR...except that they were all sailboats and quite comfortable at the slip.

see my last paragraph:
Both are premium (read: expensive) boats when compared to the US production boats (ie hunter, catalina, beneteu, etc), they are both extremely well crafted. Once you have been aboard them, a lot of where that added cost is can easily be seen. Even more is not what you see, but how serviceable and well designed the systems are.
