Not to be too harsh...but I would question financial ability to carry this dream forward with the 38-42 foot boat if you're thinking this boat is your boat purchase budget. Unless you're extremely self reliant and can do all the boat work yourself, a vessel in that size range is going to require significant resources to get up to trans-ocean readiness. Think smaller...or understand that one can cruise the Bahamas for a lifetime and not be bored.

We have explained a little of our plan on other threads. The budget for our boat will be $30-60K. You are right, we are looking for the smallest boat we can find that meets our few requirements.

We need a boat with 2 separate sleeping areas, although a aft quarter berth might work. We just don't want to have to sleep in the dinette every night. It would also be nice if it had a separate shower too.

As far as the cost we are very frugal and know how to do most maintenance work ourselves. Of coarse we have no way of knowing the real cost until we get out there. That's why we plan to spend a few yrs in the USA learning what works and what doesn't. At this point we are not worried about the money, we'll have enough.

My budget was 8 to 10 grand finished, for a 30 footer weak-ender. Got the boat for 1,500. so now I should be able to update her. around $7,500 I dont like to spend money.

Separate shower stalls are awesome! I have one on my 36' Squadron.

Do yourselves a huge favor. Get a quote from a Yanmar repair center for the repair/overhaul of a 3GM30 engine...

Oh we are not serious about this valiant in this listing, just thought we'd show others. It is to bad it's not close to us so we could at least see it in person though.

The separate sleeping areas are because the wife and I don't sleep in the same bed. At least not all night...lol We just get a better nights sleep if we have our own beds. The separate shower is because we plan to live on the hook and will be taking most all showers on board.

A full keel or at a least a scag mounted rudder with a protected prop is also high on our list.

A few notes. From what I read I think this was a family of 4, 2 adults 2 small kids. There were other cost not listed, like a new engine for the boat. They knew the days were numbered for the stock engine.

A few questions come up right away. What was the other category? Also they must have eaten out a lot?????

If you take out the other and rest./bar figures you get down to about $1200/mo. Also figure a cpl with no kids and you might consider that a even trade for the inflation since these numbers are now 5 to 8 yrs old.

Nope...the costs are from when they were only Pat & Ali...the kids only came on their LATEST adventure which is on the motorsailer. These costs were for a catamaran that they circumnavigated upon.

If you read their blog, yes they do eat out but not extravagantly. Its usually cheap fast food.

That site is the best I've seen of a long term cruise and cost breakdown. I would expect costs to have gone up MORE than inflation, as boating is a luxury space and people raise prices all the time more than inflation.

Life style will have as much to do with the cost to cruise as anything. For instance I can not tell when we went out to eat last & it's been so long since we went to see a movie I'm not sure it was this century.

Most of the furniture and cloths we have came from goodwill. We don't own a car with less than 100K miles on it. Heck I even built my own house, work shop and all the equipment for our business.

When is the last time you heard of someone removing the engine from their own car and rebuilding it?

These days it seems not many ppl do anything for themselves. There is nothing I can not fix or do myself. If I don't know how I'll learn.
