Project boat hunters

I found a project boat a Colombia 41 flush deck the owner has died and his wife wants to get rid of it. It needs a compleat refit I mean everything interior and all but it can be bought for maybe $15.000-$12.000 dollars and you can e-mail me in New Orleans at sailnaway@earthlink.net

Boats like these are a tough call. In really nice shape these boats have a value somewhere south of $35,000. When you think about what is involved in putting a boat this size through a ''complete refit'', assuming that all of the labor is free, the materials and parts alone are worth more than the boat will ever be worth. I generally recommend that people be careful in their choice of a project boat. In other words I suggest that people contemplating taking on a project boat should pick a boat that will be a good boat when it is finished so that it will be worth their efforts even if the boat can''t be sold for what they have in it. This is not one of those ''good boats''. Given that these boats are such poor sailors and so reviled in the court of public opinion I would think that there are much better project boats out there.

On the other hand, I feel sorry for the widow who is stuck with it.

Respectfully,
Jeff

Like Jeff says it is a hard call. I hate to see a young person get into this kind of a boat thinking cheep way to go sailing and in fact they may never get her to where she will sail other than on the bay or maybe not at all.
