1976 Rhodes 22
I have an opportunity to view a Rhodes 22 in pretty decent shape the way it looks.
The owner said it is 100% ready to sail (I think he's stretching it a little) and the gel coat is perfect. From the pics it looks like it's in pretty good shape. Has a trailer that is solid, tires are drivable but could use replacing ect... He's asking $1,000 but sounded very negotiable. He does have the title for both trailer and boat.
So I'm thinking I might go take a look this weekend, can't hurt just to go check it out.
I have been doing some reading on them and they seem like a well liked hull, he does think that the sails are original although he said it wasn't used much and they are in good shape, so I'm thinking they might need to be replaced.
Just looking for opinions ect... Anybody own one? Things to look for/ known problems. I did find the Rhodes 22 site but didn't find much of that type of info.
Thanks in advance,
Austin

That almost sounds too cheap for a Rhodes 22. If it is a good clean boat then I would say go for it. Rhodes 22 have a very strong following and are known for there build quality when compared to other boats that size. You don't see a whole lot of them come up on the market and when they do they seemed to be overpriced considering they are 22 foot boats.

So, I went to look at the Rhodes today. Pretty solid boat overall for the age and cost. The hull seems to be in good shape with a darn nice gel coat fora 35 year old boat. Cockpit and deck are just dirty but it's all there. The cabin is rough, most of the wood has been replaced and done poorly. The toilet original is gone (it includes a new porta pottie), the sink is there but not hooked up. So I would plan on doing a full redo of the cabin, which is a project, but nothing I can't handle. Centerboard operates freely and looks good.
The jib looks pretty nice, very clean, and the roller furling is all there and looks to be in good shape. However the main would need a cleaning and a few patches, it has a few mouse chew holes and is a little dirty. Although it looks very usable.
The only structural problem I noticed is that is has quite a few spider cracks in the gel coat on the deck above the cabin. I know this is somewhat common, I'm just wondering if this will be a problem later on. The deck is solid all around with very no soft spots that I noticed.
I'm also having trouble matching the Hull ID number. The first three letters are CFG, which as far as I know should be the Manufacturer code. The problem is that according to the Rhodes 22 site the manufacturer code should be GBX. The boat looks like a rhodes as far as I can tell and the rest of the hull number match up as they should. Does anybody have any info on this?
I'll be uploading pics shortly, theyre to big and I have to go to another computer to reduce them.
Austin

The current code for rhodes 22s would be GBX, for General Boats, the current manufacturer.
Deprecated Browser Error
CFG is columbia fiberglass, the original manufacturer of the rhodes22 among others.
Jump on that boat. It's too cheap to pass up and Rhodes 22s have great resale value.

That's a great deal for a boat and trailer. Is the outboard included?
I love the Rhodes 22; its been about 20 years since I sailed on one, but I always thought it was the best thought-out trailerable around. The problem has always been price: new, they cost about 50% more than a Catalina 22. You get quite a bit for your money; in my mind, a superior boat to its comps. But still, for that kind of money, you can buy a boat with standing headroom, an inboard engine and a real galley and head. Its really a niche boat: someone who wants a trailerable boat that is no bigger than 22 feet, but wants to cruise in as much comfort as possible and is willing to pay a premium for it.
Even if your boat is an older model without the creature comforts, it still has that unique hull form. Note the flared topsides near the bow that deflect spray.

Thanks for the replys,
The outboard doesn't come with it. He does have one, but he's keeping it for his dingy (he also has a 30ft that he replaced it with). I'm think I'm prolly gonna go get it tomarrow. Everything I read about the boat says good about it. I think that any work it requires will be worth it in the end. I got him down to $600 before I left, although i do have to get tires for the trailer before I take in home (an hour drive). They are pretty dry rotted.

A new Rhodes 22 fully loaded including poptop enclosure, boom room, jib furler, trailer, motor, etc., etc., will still be shy of $50K.
The Catlaina 22 is REALLY barebones in comparison.
A good comparison might be a WWP 19, which retails for south of $25K out the door...but it's amazing how much more room, comfort, and livability that additional 2 feet can offer.
Show me what trailerable NEW boat you can buy with standup headroom, an inboard engine, a real galley and a head for less money.
Let's compare apples to apples.

Go. Tonight.
I'm hopping in the car with $650 in my pocket, but you have about a four hour head start.
