Need Performance Info: Catalina 22 vs Columbia 23T

Hey guys. The boats Iím looking at buying are a Columbia 23T and a Catalina 22. Everything else aside I just want to know how they compare performance wise and I can find any good comparison discussions. Iím wondering about ease of sailing, speed, how well do they point, how stable are they. You get the idea. The boat is going to be used on the Ohio River. Also I just heard that I might need to move to Myrtle Beach for work, so some discussion of the twos offshore performance would be useful too.

Thanks
Zach

Catalina 22 comes with a variety of keel configurations, which one are you considering?

Looking for advice

I am looking for advice on buying a used boat. I will be sailing about 90% of the time in the Chesapeake. Since my wife is not a sailor, I also need a boat I can handle solo or with minimal help at best. I want a boat I can cruise the bay for a few days or a week if desired. I want to keep the price under $10,000.

Right now I am looking at a couple different types: Catalina 25, Cape Dory 25, and a Pearson Triton at the upper end of the size scale. I may consider an O'day 22 or similar at the lower size end.

I have some experience both inshore and offshore with my longest passage a 2 week trip down the bay and up to Long Island and return.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Per the OP: Don't know about the Columbia. The C22 shouldn't be counted on for offshore work. Plenty of people have taken a C22 across to Bahamas, however, you would have to be very careful with weather window. If you have any weeds in the water in your area the swing keel cable is a PITA (it will harvest weeds). I like that the Columbia has an all wood interior. That would be easer to work on, or modify.

gpittman - I would imagine the Cape Dory 25 will be much more expensive than the C25, or O'day. The Triton looks like a great boat. If you haven't seen it check out Atom Voyages - Home

p.s. The Triton looks great b/c it looks like my boat.

Barquito, I watched all the Atom videos on YouTube. Great adventure and the Triton seems like the most seaworthy of the group. On his site, it looks like he is giving in and installing an engine finally. I also saw there is a Triton club in the Chesapeake .
