Hunter 25

I am a novice sailor and am considering purchasing a 1985 Hunter 25. The current owner told me that it has an 8 hp diesel engine. He said that this engine was not powerful enough to sail the boat in the ocean due to the currents. Is this true? Also, I am planning on having a survey done on the boat even though it is only $5,000. Any one know how I go about finding a marine surveyor? Thanks

Where are you located, and where is the boat? You might get some better advice as to what kind of currents you are dealing with and who might be a good surveyor. I will say don't go with one that brokers commonly use as they are sometimes not as critical as they should be. While 9 HP is not a lot, it should be enough to get you in and out of the harbor. Lots of people with boats that size with a 9 HP or less outboard on it.

Great boat that I sailed in Barnegat Bay, N.J. and off shore out of Atlantic City To Little Egg Harbor. I did fine on a 7 1/2 HP Honda in & out of the inlets.
