Buying a Boat

You know, I just finished a total refit (well, almost, after I get the shaft trued and engine aligned) all by my lonesome on a Bristol 35. While I don''t necessarily agree with JeffH in a number respects regarding boat buying, let me say this. Most people won''t have the drive I have to work on boats and learn every square inch and aspect of rig, hull, systems, etc. Nobody works on my boat but me. However, this is a result of admitted necessity forced by my tearing things apart willy-nilly at haulout and jumping from project to project (lacking parts or whatever for the first) before finishing the last. And not being willing to spend the $$ to have someone else do something I can often do better, albeit by typically putting in more time and care. It started with the first edition of "This Old Boat." To do it over with the (too much) money I have in the B-35 yawl? Almost finished boat with good, easy access engine. No slobbered-in roving with dry, crinkled edges in areas like the rudder stops, fuel tank beds, etc. Probably something akin to a Kelly-Peterson 44 or down to 38 or so with less draft (I didn''t spend that much on the Bristol). However, I like boat projects, but really - REALLY can''t justify the full-time effort above and beyond my real-world work. Know the systems, don''t impulse buy, research, know your limits and the boat''s limits, get something that you can accept on all points of sail and enjoy it. This B-35 is going to do a Caribbean loop and serve nicely as the water winnebago here in the Islands. One last thing - always buy with an eye for the next buyer in mind. For crying out loud, just do it. And don''t hang yourself in the yard for three months. Jeesh. KW
