Re: Shannon 28 versus Caliber 33
I know they are both good boats. Does the 5 feet more in size in this instance provide more seaworthiness/safety? If I am 100 miles offshore and get caught in nasty seas, all else being equal, would I be better off at the helm of a Shannon 28 or a Caliber 33?
We sailed a Shannon 28 for fifteen years on the Great Lakes and got caught out in our share of stinky weather. We experienced winds as high as 35 knots true, gusting to who knows what and seas up to ten feet.
While those Great Lakes waves have a short, steep quality to them that can beat the snot of a lot of boats and crews, our little Shannon just sailed happily along doing what she was designed to do: Keep us dry and reasonably comfortable and get us safely to where we were going. Many was the long, rough, cold, wet night that I sent my fervent thanks to Walter Schulz for his design genius.
