Question Oday 22

I am now looking at an Oday22 that is in my price range (super cheap). I will be making an appointment to take an in-depth look soon, but one thing I saw which worries me greatly, is that the bottom of the hull is deformed from resting on a trailer that I think was maide for a different boat. The front of the bunk has pushed the hull inward, and I dont know if this is something to check or a walk-away item. I have posted a question on the Oday owners pages, but have not gotten any feedback yet. Any feedback?

Re: Oday 22

It is difficult to say without pictures or perhaps even an X-ray of the hull around the deflected areas of the hull.
In an ideal world the hull will expand out to its original dimensions when put into water for some time. This should happen if the hull material has not been compromised by the concave dents in the hull. If the concavity is deep enough it could compromise some of the fibers in the hull material, weakening it. The problem is it will be difficult to see inside the fiberglass.
Can the trailer bunk(s) be adjusted or modified to better fit the shape of the hull?

Re: Oday 22

I am not sure that it would be possible to re-do the trailer without major work. I am trying to upload a pix of the boat to show as best I can the change of countour on the hull. I would say that the indentation is about 1/2" and is about an 18" area.

Re: Oday 22

Check if there was a lot of water inside the boat that made it too heavy (and also possibly damaged inside stuff). If there is no visible damage, make a low-ball offer and go sailing. If this was going to be an off-shore boat, I would be more careful.

Re: Oday 22

1/2" deflection over an 18" area does not sound like too much as long as the hull has not cracked. My boats winter storage cradle has made 'dimples' in the hull that rebounded once back in the water.
Still difficult to say without a picture of the bottom where it is bending.
The trailer bunks should be below where there are internal bulkheads (walls, knee walls etc) in the cabin.
You could build another bunk for the bow section using 2"x lumber topped with carpet.

yeppers... :-D

Sounds good. There has been water inside from time to time, from precipitation... but it does not do that much here in New Mexico ... the companionway doors are missing, and it looks like the front hatch leaks, which is to be expected. The owner claims it has been in her front yard for 8 to 10 years, and I know it has been for 3. The sails were stored in he garage, so unless a rodent has chewed on it, they should at least be OK for now. She is down to $1,500 now from 3k this summer. I am thinking of offering 500 to 1k if I don't find any other items... Now I have to decide between this with lots of work, or a Merit 22 in. Good shape for close to 3k... I am leaning towards the O'day... but that could be emotion thing...
