1976 Pearson 26

Hey all. Just came across a listing for a P26 for a good price. Curious as to Pearson's rep and anything specific to look for if i go see it. Looks clean in the pics, but of course, who knows when they were taken.

Still can't figure out how to make this an active link, so if someone else can, i would appreciate it greatly.

They are decent enough boats, always comes down to condition. Looks OK in the pics but as you said you never know. Go take a look and take lots of pics.

I had a P26 about 12 years ago. Sailed her on Lake Ontario. Stiff hull - not much flexing, well made, fun to sail, sailed nice in the Wednesday night beer run races. I took a day off for a overnight sail one day but there was a storm moving in and my wife wanted to put off the sail. Only day off in months so I said lets go anyways and will stay within Henderson Harbor. Handled the storm with no problem at all, in fact it was a great sail with a strong breeze.
Watch out for that wood beam as you enter in and out of the companionway. I have hit my head on that beam too many times.
For what to look for, it all depends on how well someone took care of it. We had very little problems with our P26.

From the pictures, looks nice. It's priced right at $1,200.

He seems to have the most info out there on them. Actually looked at one when I was shopping for our boat, but stepped up a bit to get standing headroom in the cabin rather than try and sell the 26 when we outgrew it( or got sick of bashing our heads on the cabin roof!) but there are some good deals to be had on p26's.

I have a Pearson 26 One Design. There were many more standard P 26's built. The standard boat has a raised cabin roofline just aft of the mast for a little more headroom inside and the cabin itself is a little longer toward the aft of the boat, reducing the cockpit size somewhat. Other than that difference, they are both built hell-for-stout. The hull is solid fiberglass while the deck is cored with wood in many places. Think of the deck of the boat being built like a sandwich...thick fiberglass is the bread (outside deck and interior liner) and wood core is the meat. My deck in the mast base area is THICK...more than two inches. Anywhere there is a piece of hardware attached to the deck or cabintop is a potential place for water to leak past the fastener and get into the wood core causing rot. The chainplates are another place to look for water intrusion into the core and bulkhead. Rudder bearing and rudder post are another problem area with P 26's, unless they have been overhauled already (many have) but it's not a hard job to update. Look for soft squishy areas in the cockpit floor where the rudder head attaches to rudder post. Also look for squishy spots around the mast base, bow pulpit mounting points, and cabintop. By all accounts they are solid and safe boats. I'm replacing a rotten bulkhead in mine currently. Water intrusion is about the only thing that will cause serious problems. Also check the bilge for rusty keel bolts. That could be a sign of something problematic.

One more thing...for $1200 if it turns out to be a turd, you can strip it of everything, sell it on ebay and get your money back...especially if there is a decent outboard motor included ;-)
