Re: Any Watkins 27 Owners in Florida?

My previous boat was a 1981 W27. It was a great boat for what we used her for in the Tampa Bay area. My wife and I would go on extended weekends and longer without hesitation. While she could use more storage room, the boat is stable, forgiving and overbuilt....coupled with less than 4' draft you could not go wrong with this choice for this area. Agree'd, she was not the fastest boat in the fleet, but as soon as we settled into the cockpit, we were already where we wanted to be!

We sold her for a bigger boat and became fast friends with her new owners. They are having a great time and have actually completed many of the projects I only had plans for. Its good we can still visit her....she was a great boat!

Re: Any Watkins 27 Owners in Florida?

I drove 7 total hours today (round-trip) to investigate a possible W27 purchase.

I learned a lot. For instance, I LOVE THE W27. So roomy for it's overall size. Love the layout in the cabin and headroom.

This particular one is well priced ($4K), but needs more care than I'm willing to take on right now. The diesel is dead. It needs glass work. The standing and running rigging are suspect. New hatches needed. Very rough around the edges. So many deck screws are loose, I think the whole thing needs to be patched and sealed then completely installed properly.

I'm going to keep my eye out for the right boat. Tried to see another listed in the area but the owner bailed last minute. Oh well. My wife and daughter came along for the ride and kept me company.

It only fueled their desire to own one soon. And that's a great thing.

Re: Any Watkins 27 Owners in Florida?

Tickled ta hear it's to yer liking

Most of the problems you mentioned are typical of most boats of this age. While the W-27 does have it's share of foibles, noe are insurmountable given time and lotsa energy.
The motor issue is the deal killer , IMHO; once laid atop the rest of the items.. Given that we al lhave our own set of specs and talents; each will differ in what we may tolerate.

Keep looking..you find one

Best,
Paul

Re: Any Watkins 27 Owners in Florida?

Tomorrow I drive another 6 hours round-trip to see a W27. If it's half as nice as the pictures sent to me, I'm buying it.

More details will follow tomorrow.

Re: Any Watkins 27 Owners in Florida?

We're buying Miss Marisol!

It's a '78 Watkins 27. There's a new custom traveler for mainsheet control above the cabin, new rigging, sails in great shape, diesel purr's, roller furling head sail, solar power with inverter, auto helm, chart plotter, like new cushions, and more. It's ready to cruise.

I'm meeting the seller at their bank on Thursday to pay. They have a loan, so we're going to use my payment to get the title released. If anyone has advice on buying a boat in this situation, let me know.

We'll keep it in Port Charlotte for 1 month, then sail down to Islamorada and keep at a family house there until late summer. I'm thinking Dry Tortuga's this spring/summer too.

I'm so happy!

Ya done good Ryan! Norm, rest his soul, kept a smart boat. I've used photos he'd posted over on the other site as reference; re: rigging, traveler and clutches.

Here's to pleasant cruising!

I could see his handy work in every part of the boat. The electrical system, rigging, custom hardware, and even the standing rigging.

He obviously loved her. I wish I had been able to meet the man, but I believe I'll know him quite well through Miss Marisol.
