No as far as i know it is 3,400 pounds of lead

Is the keel steel?
What I am getting at is that if the keel is a steel envelope that plug may be a way to access the area above the lead as the lead will not fill the entire volume of the keel.
If the keel is timber then,,,,never mind.

I got ya now. most of these were built in the Uk. and they use steel keels. from the original owner i understand the the keel was poured in a wood mold.

So, It's a steel keel with lead inside. Right?
If so, I would guess that plug is to access the volume in the keel above the lead. You have to have some way of getting into it.

do you think that would explain the corrosion of the plugs? i looked all over and this is the only corrosion i saw.

Sorry but I am not a corrosion expert. I think there are several here who are. My guess is that plug fitting is just made of inferior metal not suitable for that environment.

Any way you can unplug it and take a look at what is in there? My guess is air.

So i had the survey done on this boat and it turns out these fittings are drain plugs and after wiping them off there is no corrosion just bilge gunk. And survey says that this is a very solid boat all around. just needs a few minor maintenance things done that the po has neglected. so i made an offer. So within in a week i should have a new and interesting way to wast money and time.
