Advice on O'Day 22

I had been looking at purchasing a Catalina 22, when I came across a ODay 22 on Craigslist.

Does anyone have any recommendations on this boat? Since I was primarily looking at Catalina 22's, I had been researching those and waiting for the perfect one to come onto the market. However, when I saw this O'Day it looked to be in good condition from the pictures and reasonably priced. I did email him and it sounds like it could need new sails in the near future. How does this compare to the Cat 22 sailing wise? That would be my main concern. I primarily plan to use the boat for day sailing, with very little over nights. Use would be on inland lakes, possibly to the Great Lakes for small vacations.

I'll post a link to the boat, but need to get to 10 posts. I guess I'll do a countdown so I can post the link.

Thanks

Re: Advice on O'Day 22

A lot depends on if you will trailer launch or have the boat docked. This would be better docked, and a Cat better if trailer launched.

I like the color. I have Cat 22, but I see both around. I have read the shoal keel Oday is a little more tender than the Cat but on the other hand the swing keel on the Cat is a maintenance worry.

Looks like a nice boat for a nice price. Good luck.

Re: Advice on O'Day 22

Depends on your use of the boat. Quality-wise, I think they are similar. Value-designed and built, neither are high-end. Both are good boats. If this Oday is the stub keel model without the centerboard (I think Oday went to the keel/centerboard set up on the '76 model), then the Catalina will sail better. The ad says that all the plywood has been replaced. If that means the interior bulkheads, then watch out for two things: the quality of the interior joinery (not great from the factory) is now doubly suspect. I've seen some horror shows below when owners do their own work. Also, if the bulkheads below got so rotten they needed replacement, that also means there were leaks in the deak that let the water down there; this also means there was water intrusion into the deck. How was that remedied? Has the deck been recored (a very big job rarely undertaken on cheap, old boats). How were the deck leaks fixed? Removal and rebedding for the deck hardware, or some squirts of silicone around the fixtures? That is a really cheap price for a boat and trailer; to me it indicates aknowledgement of problems. Check for deck delamination, water stains on the bulkheads below, evidence of rebedded hardware, etc. Remember, no matter how much you pay, there's no such thing as a cheap boat.
