Ericson 27

Hello All,

Hope you can offer some advice or comments please! Looked at a 1973 Ericson 27 on the weekend and it's ready to be launched and sailed. That's not what I want to do with it though. I'd like to spend time restoroing all the interior wood and just making it ours.
It is tiller steering and just questioning the location of the tiller. It's located pretty close to the companionway openning, this is the first boat I've seen this? Look forward to learning about this boat!
Cheers and thanks in advance.

Be sure and check into ericsonyachts.org . . . . great group! I have an Ericson 27 also a 73. Mine has been converted to wheel but the tiller location I'd say is average . . . it puts you handy to traveler & jib sheets . . .

While all steering systems (wheel or tiller) have their advantages and disadvantages, having the tiller where the driver can enjoy some shelter behind the cabin or the dodger on any day with blowing rain or spray is a Really Good Thing.

Re: Ericson 27

There is a reason that the tiller is placed where it is. In the attached diagram note where the engine and propeller are and the shape of the hull. There wasn't much choice other than to angle the rudder which moves the tiller forward. You are comptemplating a 40 year old boat and design. Think long and hard before you start dropping serious coin into making it something that it's not.

Re: Ericson 27

Thank you!
I'd like to know more about your thoughts on the 1973 Ericson 27 you own Mike1. I think the looks are very pleasing and the construction is that older method? The interior layout is what I wanted with settee's on both sides and the sink with the head. For a 27 footer there seems a fair bit of room (maybe not so much storage?)
GeorgeB, thanks for the diagram...that's great. I have no intention of changing anything...just thought the tiller location was close to the companionway in a way I have not seen before. Your comments explain why!
Olson34, thanks for your comments, that helps and makes lots of sense. The link to Ericson Yachts is appreciated, I'll be there.
