Just Bought Nigel Calder's Cruising Book

Nigel Calder's Cruising Handbook: A Compendium for Coastal and Offshore Sailors

(The above is a link, but it will only work for the brave and true of heart.)

Great book; I'm only on page 60 something and I feel like I've doubled my knowledge of boat design and construction.

No longer will the number and location of cup holders be the main criteria for cockpit qualification; the scales have fallen from my eyes!

The Bristol 29.9 is still at the top of my list, but the beamier production boats are off of it. It is not inconceivable that a more slender boat could kick the 29.9 off the top (maybe one that is more slender and younger )

I also might go 32-34 feet, apparently there is no substitute for LWL on a cruising boat.

I got my copy used from Amazon for $18.96 delivered; I recommend it for every cruiser's library.

Very good book indeed. Beth Leonard has a cruising handbook as well which I found much more comprehensive and complete. Both are essential reading, especially before you buy your boat for cruising.

Re: Just Bought Nigel Calder's Cruising Book

I read both Beth Leonard and Nigel Calder's books mostly cover-to-cover. Great information in both. They cover some of the same stuff, but each has it's own focus. I think I would want a relatively simple cruising boat. Nigel Calder tends to make it seem that you need to have everything to the n'th degree. Taking all his advice would make for a pretty expensive boat (but very comfortable, functional, and safe).

I believe my copy is 2001 - it does have a section on GPS & chartplotters (IIRC) but does not go into great depth.
