36 or 38

We have spent many hours looking at and winnowing out boats and the final choices have come to the 36 or 38 Catalina. One of these has better sailing manners offshore and the differance may be large or small, but we don''t know and have been told that we should go to the source. So if anyone has experienced either or both we would appreciate some sage guidance.

Our goals are Hawaii, Ecuador and more of the western coast of South America. So please pass on some advice or directions to advice for these two boats preferably boats 1989 and back to 1979.

I have owned both a 1985 Catalina 36, and a 1984 Catalina 38. Very different boats. The 36 is much roomier, wider aft, more comfortable, more stable at sea, and heavier. For most folks a better bet for cruising. Having said that, I liked the 38 better, for 2 reasons: much better sailing perfomance (West Coast to Hawaii and back), and IMHO it looks better with its tumblehome sides and skinny rear end.
