Radar Installation

Has anyone installed their own radar who might want to share some of their experences. I am thinking of doing it myself on a Hunter 310. what is the level of difficulty. Is it such that it''s worth paying a professional. Any thoughts would be appriciated.

The degree of difficulty increases greatly if you need to cut and splice the cable, which is most likely if you choose a mast mount. That said, I mast-mounted on an Islander 28 with a junction box in the head.

I installed a Raymarine radar, found the documentation, instructions and hardware all very easy to work with. I''d rate it as one of the easiest improvement tasks among major systems work.

I''ll disagree with Richard a bit, as I don''t see the splicing of a small gauge multi-conductor cable to be especially difficult so long as you have the right tools and materials. Moreover, Raymarine sells special junction boxes and splicing kits to aid you in this process (altho'' I did not need to use one).

One caution: No matter where you plan to mount it, think about sending one or more of the components off for service at some later time and provide for removal and reinstallation, burning no bridges behind you.
