Van deStadt 29

Hi, We are looking at a steel VandeStadt 29 sailboat, and wondering if this design and material would make a sturdy cruiser. Is steel to heavy for a 29 footer? It is made by a reputable boat yard. We are planning to do some lake and coastal cruising and would like a boat capable of blue water. Sturdy and comfortable, good motion are a priority over speed for us.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Not as well known in the US, but E.G. van de Stadt is among the most esteemed designers of the 20th century. He did many design for steel. So you're pretty safe with the 'brand'.
Of course, that only get's you half of the way.

Re: Van deStadt 29

Our previous boat was a steel VDS34 and a fine ship she was/is. the 29'er looks a bit like a small 34.

However .... fast (yes I know you said not important) she was not. Over 15 knots and she was getting along quite nicely but sub tens was not for those in a hurry. A mate of ours has the timber (cold moulded) VDS34 and I must say that in almost any conditions she is the better performer. Even 34' is to my mind too small for steel so I'd steer clear of 29' particularly when your emphasis is on lake and coastal.
