Catalina 25 @ Florida Keys

Hello all! I'm about to purchase a 1982 Catalina 25 lead keel for use in the FL Keys and eventually the Bahamas. It comes with a Main, a regular jib and a 150 Genoa.

I wanted to open this up for any opinions, advice, etc regarding this boat.

I appreciate any input and Happy Sailing!

Do you plan to have the boat surveyed?

I've been considering it. Sadly, cost is a factor, although I realize NOT having it surveyed could cost much more in the long run.

My problem is that it's a unique opportunity to get a boat that we otherwise could not afford right now. Hesitation could put me a year further away from boat ownership.

How much does a survey cost, more or less?

Depending on experience and knowledge of the surveyor, anywhere from $15-25 per foot plus the cost to haul the boat. if you plan to have the boat insured, no insurance company will touch it without a survey report.

Do not bypass either the survey or insurance. You can't afford not to.

Unfortunately the haul and survey would have driven the boat to the point of being unaffordable at the moment. I did the best I could based on the suggestions here and a few other places (especially the Catalina forums).

Fortunately, I was also able to track down the owner prior to the person I bought from, and he was able to give me some pointers as well. While only time will tell, I don't think there are any showstoppers.

Now to hunt for insurance!

Hate to tell you, but no reputable insurance company will touch it without a survey.

Geico is a decent company. I'm really surprised they would insure without a survey, more like shocked.
Glad you were able to get coverage.
