1981 43' Ta Tong Cape Horn Cutter
I have the above mentioned vessel and can find almost no data or reviews on her anywhere. I would appreciate anything that anyone might know about this Taiwanese built vessel. She has a flush deck to aft of the mast, a small bluewater cockpit, a canoe stern and is powered by a Perkins 4-108. Thanks, gts1544 / George / gtspettigue@gmail.com

Never heard of Ta Tong but it looks like it might be a bastard step child of one of Bob Perry's boats - that happened to him more than once I believe. If so, it would at least have good genes.

I have heard the Bob Perry / Valiant series reference before, but cannot find any information to that effect, so I have tried to avoid using that as a description. Again, any factual info would be appreciated. gts1544 / George / gtspettigue@gmail.com

Try searching for Ta Yang and Ta Shing boat yards in Taiwan. They both built similar boats for tayana, hans christaian, baba, formosa etc...I think the Ta Tong name is wrong. Never heard of it in 20+ years of owning a Taiwanese built boat and visiting the factory several years ago.
Another place to try and ID the builder is in the HIN number. Usually this number will give some clues as to the builder, build date, hull number etc.

There is a Ta Tong Marine in Taiwan. I wonder if a guy bought a hull and then jobbed out the finish work to the locals and then sold it as a Ta Tong. Maybe he had dreams of becoming major boat builder?

Gentlemen, The first picture of the Polaris 43 looks nearly identical to my boat. I am including pre-paint pictures of CAREFREE for comparison purposes. The portlight arrangement in the superstructure and the hull seem identical, as does the cut of the bow. The Polaris 43 sheet at Sailboatdata.com is the worlds largest sailboat database. seems to confirm that she is an unauthorized copy of a Robert Perry design. Keep weighing in, Guys, as this is more information than I have been able to come up with myself. Thanks to all!! gts1544

Pretty good guess. From reading Perry's book and other things over the years, it seems apparent that the boatbuilding industry in Taiwan back then was full of splashing, yards sharing moulds, name changes, pirating of designs etc. etc.
They all seemed to have at least two things in common - lots of low tech glass in the mouldings and lots of well crafted teak. Everything else seemed pretty variable.
If the OP's boat IS a knockoff of some kind of the Polaris then, as I mentioned earlier, at a minimum it has good Perry genes.
