Tartan 37 versus Sabre 38 Mark I

I am considering two boats - a Tartan 37 and the Sabre 38 Mark I. Could people give me the pluses and minuses of both boats? Thank you

Re: Tartan 37 versus Sabre 38 Mark I

the only negative on the Sabre 38 is the possible mast step damage that some of these boats have...

they are both well built, great sailing boats.

I would then base the purchase on a good survey, which boat fits your needs and condition, condition, condition.

I will say that owning a Sabre was easy with the factory support still a phone call away...that is NOT something that Tartan of late is good at....even with their new boats.

YMMV

Both excellent boats if they are conditionally sound. I would go for the Sabre. Watch for window/ port leaking and water intrusion.

Isn't the Tartan 37 an older model? S&S design. A very popular boat, which will help if you decide to sell. Most of them are centerboards, I think. I would go with the fin keel for reasons of performance. Don't know anything about the Sabre 38 in particular, but I know that my friends who have Sabres love them and they are well-built.

Re: Tartan 37 versus Sabre 38 Mark I

Both are nice boats. Are they both in the same condition? If you tend to shallower water, the Tartan might be better suited. The Sabre is certainly newer, so fittings and equipment may be in better shape. Practical Sailor's Used Boat Buyers Guide has a good article on the Tartan - don't remember if it has anything about the Sabre- I loaned my copy out and haven't gotten it back. We pass both these boats to leeward, so don't go crazy expecting fantastic performance. They're capable, but more in a cruiserly, steady-as-she-goes fashion.
