Bristol 24 Corsair rudder removal

can someone help me out with some instructions or guides on how to remove the rudder on my 1975 B24? I need to replace or fix the prop (next thread), repack the stuffing box and stuff.

judging by the amount of views so far, and no responses, I'd say there are alot of us looking for the same answer

Now facing the same problem because the stuffing box hose is shot and must be replaced.

My question is whether it is necessary to remove the shoe at the bottom of the keep in order to drop out the rudder, or whether there is enough play with the top bearing removed and the stuffing box hose loose to swing the rudder past the shoe.

Anybody here with experience in this?

I ended up having mine done professionally, but they showed me what they did, and there is a hidden fixture at the bottom of the rudder that holds it in place, and to remove it, fiberglass has to be removed to access it, and then it releases the rudder for removal...when done and rudder replaced, you need to fiberglass over it again. I know I once found pictures of this on a 29' Bristol, and now know that it's the same for the 24' as well. If you've googled this like I have, you should come across the same info...good luck!!!!!!

There seem to be at least two kinds of rudder shoe on Bristol 24s. One is bronze, but I don't know whether that is original equipment. The other is molded into the hull and has a captive pin that fits up into a recess on the bottom of the rudder. So it seems that in order to drop the rudder it will be necessary to uncover the bottom of the pin and both ends of the bolt that holds the pin in place.

Did your guy have any trouble getting the stuffing box apart? Mine was a bear.

The pin is accessed from the side of the rudder shoe. There is a cross bolt that passes thru each side of the rudder shoe and thru a hole in the base of the pin. Sand down each side of the rudder shoe and you will see the head of the bolt. Go from there. Remove the bolt and the pin will lift up as you lift up the rudder. You may have to turn the rudder blade all the way to port or starboard to get it up high enough.

Sorry, I have no idea, except to say he did tell me about most of the problems he did have, and that wasn't one of them Good Luck!!!!!

not at the moment, but after I get the boat home is a few month , I'll see if any after pictures will help (can't remember if they repainted over the area or not).
