Can someone help me out with the dimensions of the outboard well of a Bristol 27?

My boat is in storage out of state so I can't go out back with a tape measure. I'm looking to replace my outboard before I go get her, but I read in another thread that a 4 stroke yamaha 9.9 won't fit (exactly the size I was about to buy). I haven't been able to find the dimensions of the outboard well online, can someone hook me up?

Hi..... my 27 is parked outside. I can go measure things tomorrow if you could be more specific. ...... I'm not sure what measurements you want. The outboard well is the hole that the shaft goes down through. I can't imagine a yamaha not fitting through. I use an older Honda 15 and it goes through the hole easily. Maybe you mean the depth of the Lazerette? Again, I'm thinking it would fit if my Honda 15 fits a lower horsepower Yamaha would.....so, what part is too large? Is it the cowling on the Yamaha? Or is it the outboard tiller? If I were to buy a new outboard, I'd be looking at remote control set up and mount the controls in the cockpit so you don't have to open the lazarette lid so as to make motor adjustments (throttle, foreward/ reverse/ neutral) You really can't steer the motors much in the wells so you don't worry about that much. Let me know what you need.

thank you so much. I was looking for the depth of the lazerette to make sure the cowling would fit, and the dimensions of the hole to make sure the shaft would fit. I have a force 9.9 in there now, and the tiller fits through the opening just fine so I can't imagine a similarly shaped tiller handle having a problem.

The post to which I was referring was vague: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/bristo...stol-27-a.html

I would have pm'ed him directly, but the post was several years old (also, I believe I am too new to send PMs). Thanks again, you're a life saver!

First, do you know about this web group of Bristol boat owners? It's pretty active and a great resource.

bristolboatowners : Bristol Boat Owners

(that's my boat on the welcome page)

Check it out.

About you're measurements........
As they say, a picture is worth ..... well, a lot. ;)
Width of well, 10 inches

Depth of well, 16 inches

From the top of the motor mount/inside transom to the bottom of the lazarette lid
18 3/4 inches

but, my motor mount / inside transom may not be as "tall" as yours. I've noticed that my motor sits down pretty low in the water. Two advantages, the prop is less likely to come out of the water in choppy seas and there is lot's of clearance for a larger motor like mine. so, here is a picture of the "height" of the motor mount transom

Hope all this answers your questions.

I have a Yammy 9.9 long shaft stuffed into the outboard locker and it fits just fine. Have heard from other b27 owners with the Yammy 9.9's so it can be done. Plenty of room above the engine too.

Very little room to use the motor to steer because it cannot rotate much. My Yammy is 1986 version. It has electric start so is pretty heavy. About 90#. I use the boom and a vang to lower it from the dock into the hole.

I've never needed to steer with the motor's tiller. shouldn't be a problem. thanks for the input!
